Why would I want to use Kodály?
Adult learners and Parents
The Kodály approach to music education has been developed to ensure that music is learned holistically. That things make sense and can be achieved throughout lessons and therefore empowers the learner rather than highlight what they cannot do YET.
As with all the below information this is done in logical steps over time and certainly for the younger learners they should have no idea they're learning! Just having fun.
In small group or one to one sessions this can be done alongside more traditional vocal coaching or instrumental work so that the learner begins to piece together how music works as a whole rather than just learning one thing in isolation.
As learning progresses this approach can support exams, sight reading and singing. Theory work and composition, part singing, learning to sing in tune and more . Everything is tailored to the needs of the individual to build skill and confidence together. Support for GCSE/A Level, University studies and CPD for instrumental and vocal teachers this approach has no limits.
Head Teachers and Music Coordinators
The Kodály approach to music education offers learners the opportunity to have a musical education.
It is all inclusive as it covers all learning styles and progresses in logical steps over time to allow all children to become confident musicians.
There are so many studies which explain all the other benefits of providing children with music education such as emotional development, confidence building and the impact upon other subjects. As we work through songs and rhymes it can develop language skills and communication with turn taking and sharing through songs and games.
Most importantly this approach not only offers all of the above and more to your pupils but it will deliver confident musicians who are able to not only sing well, but will be able to read well and write well. They will be able to hear music and not only echo it but analyse the form and the rhythm and pitches used.
The skills they learn will not only apply to one instrument, they will apply to all instruments making your children real musicians.
Best of all, this is taught fundamentally through the voice, songs and games so there is no cost to schools for instruments.
Hubs and Music Services
Through offering Kodály Training to your current staff you can develop their personal musicianship. Kodály said that it was about teaching the teacher to be a good musician, then they will pass it on sucessfully.
This approach, all the elements mentioned above can be taught to adults, this is not just a primary school initiative, it can be used throughout all levels of music.
If teachers understand the process through experiencing it themselves they will be more successful in their own teaching.
